Your candidates could be due a tax refund – January 2009 In today's current economic climate, there is no doubt that any extra money that you can help provide your candidates will be met with a very welcoming response.
Many working professionals in the UK however are often completely unaware that they have overpaid in tax and hence do not claim the money owed to them. Charles Hall, Financial Director of CXC Global comments that most candidates simply assume that their employer has been calculating their tax and expenses correctly for them and therefore fail to lodge a return, potentially costing them significant amounts in rebate fees.
"There are many issues which employers need to consider when analysing their employees taxes. Unfortunately not all employers are fully aware neither of these nor of their individual employee’s specific tax situation. Consequently, many employees, especially those who do not use an umbrella service such as CXC Global, simply end up paying too much tax because they are unaware that the responsibility falls on them" Hall notes.
Of course there are certain individuals who are most likely to have overpaid in tax. These include those candidates who have worked for more than one employer throughout the tax year and those who have only worked part of the tax year. Hall explains "Many international candidates who have moved to the UK during the tax year are not aware that they are entitle to a large percentage of their tax back as they have worked for less than 12 months of the tax year. These payouts can make a huge difference to these candidates, who are often still trying to recover their relocation expenses".
